The Honest Status of This Page
I build destination guides by researching the market as a travel advisor, comparing the ships and itineraries, and then experiencing the destination myself.
Antarctica came first. I will be aboard National Geographic’s Antarctica Direct itinerary in December 2026. The Arctic is next, with my first scouting voyage currently targeted for late 2027.
Until then, this page will stay short on purpose. The complete Arctic section will include ship-by-ship comparisons for Svalbard and Greenland, month-by-month guidance for polar bears and the midnight sun, realistic pricing for the Northwest Passage, and the same operator-neutral breakdowns I am currently building for Antarctica.
What I Can Already Tell You
The Arctic is not one destination.
Svalbard is the heart of polar bear expedition cruising, with the largest selection of departures and relatively simple flight connections from mainland Europe.
Greenland offers massive fjords, remote landscapes, and opportunities to experience Inuit culture. Iceland circumnavigations provide a more accessible introduction to expedition cruising. The Northwest Passage is a longer and more expensive journey where ice and weather can significantly affect the itinerary.
The right choice depends on your wildlife priorities, your comfort with sea days, how much time you have, and your budget.
Many of the leading Arctic operators also sail in Antarctica, including Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic, Quark Expeditions, Ponant, HX, and several luxury cruise lines. Through Fora, I have access to preferred partner relationships with many of the major expedition operators.
Arctic expedition cruises generally operate from May through September. The best time to travel depends on the destination and what you hope to see.
